The Importance of Organic Farming: a brief note

Food in its purest state – unadulterated by artificial additives, sweeteners, colorings, and preservatives – is the best tasting and most nutritious food available.

When you buy organic you are supporting sustainable agricultural practices that do not put poisonous chemicals in our soil, water, air, or on our food. Just like with humans, when pets consume conventionally manufactured foods, they are ingesting various amounts of harsh chemicals that can end up bio-accumulating in the body. This bio-accumulation can lead to serious illness, even cancer.

Here is an excerpt from a 1993 study conducted by the National Academy of Sciences, “By 1989, the NAS found that conventional farm practices increased soil erosion; that the application of chemical fertilizers fostered the growth of algae in streams, bays, and estuaries, choking off oxygen and killing aquatic life, to devastating effect in the nation’s fisheries, and accounting for half of the nation’s water pollution. The leaching of these nitrate fertilizers into water sources has since been associated with bladder and ovarian cancers, and possibly colon cancer.”

Organic pet food means that the farmers growing the produce and meat are not exposed to harmful chemicals as well.

With organic farming practices, fewer people run the risk of getting diseases and conditions linked to exposure to unsafe chemicals. America’s farmers are our life force. We rely on them for our food, and to show our gratitude for the difficult labor they go through everyday, we should support organic agriculture because it not only sustains our planet, but also our farmers and ourselves.

As consumers, we hold the power to make real change. Buy Local. Buy Organic.
